Things You Might Not Know About Labour

It almost never goes to plan.

Your midwife will probably encourage you to write a birth plan. It sounds lovely, doesn’t it? Choosing how you’d like to labour, what pain relief you want, who you want in the room, and how you imagine those first moments with your baby.

But the truth is, labour has a plan of its own.

Babies don’t always arrive on schedule. Labour can be quicker or slower than expected, contractions may feel stronger than you imagined, or you may need extra support such as induction or medical intervention. And that’s okay. None of this means you’ve failed — it simply means your body and baby are doing what they need to do.

One of the biggest things I learned is the importance of staying in control. Listening to your body and working with it rather than against it can make a huge difference. When fear and tension take over, pain often feels more intense. When you feel calm, supported, and informed, your body can relax and do what it’s designed to do.

This is why I would highly recommend hypnobirthing, if it’s available to you. I attended hypnobirthing classes during my third pregnancy, and the difference was incredible. My labour was calm and smooth. There was no panic, no screaming — just steady breathing, focus, and trust in my body. I managed the entire labour with only two paracetamol, something I never thought would be possible for me.

Every birth is different, and there’s no “right” way to labour. Whether your journey is long or short, medicated or natural, planned or unexpected, what matters most is feeling supported and empowered along the way.

Your body is stronger than you think — and you’re more capable than you realise.
